This is a map of Switzerland from the 1940s. It was published by the Swiss National Tourist Office. Below is a diagram from the map showing the different languages that were spoken there.

At the time, there were many refugees who had escaped from the Nazis and moved to Switzerland. This is probably the reason that there are a lot of German-speaking people there. The area in red is where most of the German speakers are found.
